PASTORAL LETTER ON THE CALL "MISSION OF OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY OF WELL" - BISHOPS OF PUERTO RICO

To all Priests, Deacons, Religious, Religious and Catholics in Puerto Rico:

After extensive and profound studies of all the problems surrounding the so-called devotion to the Virgen del Rosario del Pozo, which has spread over the last twenty years, and having the Archbishop of San Juan de Puerto Rico established a dialogue with Governing Body of the "Mission of the Virgen del Rosario del Pozo" for the past four years, and moved by the hope that the indications of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith were received in its letter and spirit of this group that has operated without local ecclesial recognition, having been challenged by our priests and other faithful present ecclesial status of the movement and devotion, we have the following clarifications and decisions:

1. We reiterate the ruling given by the 1989 decree by the Bishop of Mayagüez, in which he said that on the events of 1953 "has no supernatural character" and therefore such events have not been approved by the local ordinary ecclesiastical required for this type of case.

2. That for the purpose church called "Mission of the Virgen del Rosario del Pozo" ceased to exist as a private association without legal personality canonical 1987.

3. Therefore calls on the faithful not to approach or look at the so-called "Mission of the Virgen del Rosario del Poz or" the cultivation of their spiritual relationship with the Blessed Virgin Mary, since, as stated in the Collective Letter 1996: "That taking into account the spiritual good of the faithful of the Church, we declare and disadvantages and harmful in the long run, to the piety of the Catholic slogans and doctrinal approaches of so-called" Mission of Our Lady of the Well "and not advisable, for a moral good relationships, linkages and dependencies created between "father-mother" and "children / spiritual daughters" in organizational fields 'groups'. "

4. We remind the faithful devotees of the so-called "Mission of the Virgen del Rosario del Pozo" by decree of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in 2002 was determined: "That all persons who have issued promises (and religious oaths) in these groups can be considered free of them. "

5. We recall that the priests called "Missionaries of Christ the Priest", the result of this movement are not authorized to exercise ministry in Puerto Rico. Likewise, the religious called "Missionary Sisters of restitution," the fruit of this movement have not been officially accepted in any diocese Puerto Rico to exercise ministry.

6. We reiterate the ban on so-called leaders of the "Mission of Our Lady of the Rosary of Poz or" continue spreading and cultivating a devotion without ecclesial recognition was affirmed by the decree of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, where he had claimed to leaders of this movement to refrain from particular ascetic practices "without the authorization of the Church", they also urged them not to disseminate doctrines "hidden, reserved or confidential" that have no public nature of the Catholic faith itself.

7. To maintain and enhance the ecclesial communion in Puerto Rico the Archbishop, president of the CEP on behalf of the other bishops who make up the CEP, has required private and personal conversation Mr. Juan Collado as so-called "Columns "from the" Mission "to cease and desist from continuing to promote this devotion.

8. We urge pastors priests hosting in Puerto Rico with a deep sense of pastoral charity to all devotees called the Virgin del Rosario del Pozo, helping to cultivate a healthy Marian spirituality, so fundamental to our identity in Christ. With regard to the above remind priests the canonical principle that "the supreme law of the Church is the salvation of souls."

This intervention comes from our responsibility as pastors to have a devotional phenomenon in some ways we have felt bad, and remember the rules as the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith on the apparitions:

"Because of the doctrinal and pastoral duty, the competent authority, on its own, can intervene, moreover, do so in serious circumstances, for example, to correct and prevent abuses in the practice of worship and devotion, to the disapproval of erroneous doctrines and to avoid the dangers and inconvenience of a false mysticism, etc.. "

In view of the material presented in this document, we urge all the faithful devotees of the Virgen del Rosario del Pozo to come to their own parish priests in various parishes to receive spiritual guidance and support they need.

We hope that the desire expressed by the leadership of the "Mission" to be guided by the authority of the bishops in Puerto Rico is manifested in the faithful reception of these clarifications and determinations ours.
